How to use Cam-shield™

Cam-shield™ brand engine oil treatment is a premium, super-concentrated, ZDDP anti wear engine oil treatment. Cam-shield™ brand oil treatment is designed to be used with your favorite engine oil, whether it is conventional or synthetic or semi-synthetic. Since Cam-shield™ is a super-concentrate, it will not dilute the performance characteristics of your favorite engine oil. Use Cam-shield™ at every oil change or in between oil changes when top-up oil is added to your engine.

Each half-ounce of Cam-shield™ is guaranteed to deliver an additional 1600 ppm of Zinc (from ZDDP) to a quart of your favorite engine oil. If you wish to add 800 ppm of Zinc (from ZDDP) to a quart of your favorite engine oil, simply add a quarter-ounce of Cam-shield™ brand engine oil treatment to each quart that you wish to treat. Please see the Technical section on Engine Oil that discusses today’s API SM/ILSAC GF-4 engine oils to learn the recommended treat rate of Cam-shield™ for you. When using a treat rate of one half ounce of Cam-shield™ per quart of engine oil, the 4 ounce bottle will treat 8 quarts of your favorite engine oil and the 8 ounce bottle will treat 16 quarts of your favorite engine oil.

For accurate measurements, we strongly recommend that Cam-shield™ is at room temperature. Since Cam-shield™ is a super-concentrate, it will be very viscous (thick) at cold temperatures and accurate measurements will be difficult to obtain. To measure the correct quantity of Cam-shield™ brand engine oil additive, simply hold the container upright with the front label facing you. Be sure that both caps are securely on their spouts. Tip the bottle to the left far enough to allow Cam-shield™ to enter the measuring chamber. Return the bottle to its upright position and examine how much Cam-shield™ is in the measuring chamber using the markings provided on the measuring chamber. If you need more Cam-shield™ in the measuring chamber, simply repeat the procedure above. If you have too much for the measurement that you want to make, slowly tilt the bottle to the right (front label facing you) to return excess Cam-shield™ to the main reservoir of the bottle. Be sure to allow a few moments for Cam-shield™ to settle in the measuring chamber to obtain the most accurate reading. Use the spout on top of the measuring chamber to deliver Cam-shield either directly into your engine oil fill opening or into your engine oil bottle(s). The spout on top of the bottle is not needed by the customer for dispensing the product and is used by Cam-shield™ Lubricants to fill the bottle. Both spouts are foil sealed to maintain product integrity. Be careful not to accidently drop the foil seal or the cap into your engine as this could lead to internal engine damage.

Keep Cam-shield™ container closed with both caps on when not in use. Handle open container with care. Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated location. Do not overheat the material. Handle and store away from open flame, heat, or other sources of ignition. Protect material from direct sunlight. Do not pressurize, cut, heat, or weld containers. Completely drain and properly dispose of empty containers. Do not reuse empty containers.

Be sure to request and review the MSDS prior to using this product to fully understand the proper personal safety precautions that must be followed when using this super-concentrate.

This product must be used only for its intended application in automotive internal combustion engines as an engine oil additive and at its intended treat rate.

Current API SM/ILSAC GF-4 gasoline engine oil from the major oil companies will be conforming to the industry Phosphorus limit of 800 parts per million (ppm) maximum, which means that the Zinc (from ZDDP) level will be approximately 850 ppm.

The Zinc (from ZDDP) concentration level in the finished oil (after adding Cam-shield™ premium ZDDP treatment) should be set to the minimum needed for the application. Any additional ZDDP above that minimum level will not be harmful. As a side benefit, ZDDP also imparts anti-oxidant performance to the oil. Unless a cam/lifter break-in is the order for the day, there is not much to be gained from going over 2000 ppm Zinc.

Select your favorite engine oil and your favorite viscosity grade that you have always used for your classic car or hot rod and then determine the type of operation that you will be putting the engine through. There are 3 choices here:

  • new cam break-in
  • normal operation
  • racing

Add enough Cam-shield™ premium ZDDP concentrate to get to the appropriate concentration for that application. Current API SM/ILSAC GF-4 oils will have approximately 850 ppm Zinc.

  • Minimum of 1200 to 1300 ppm Zinc for normal operation with moderate valve spring pressures (add ¼ ounce Cam-shield™ to each quart of engine oil)
  • Approximately 1600 ppm Zinc for normal operation of muscle cars (add ¼ ounce Cam-shield™ to each quart of engine oil)
  • Approximately 2000 ppm Zinc for racing (add ½ ounce Cam-shield™ to each quart of engine oil)
  • Approximately 2500 ppm Zinc for new cam/lifter break-in (add ½ ounce Cam-shield to each quart of engine oil, supplementing the cam lobe molybdenum break-in paste)

Cam-shield™ is the only product concentrated enough to allow you to treat for break-in or racing or normal operation. 1/4 ounce of Cam-shield™ per quart of engine oil adds 800 ppm Zinc, 1/2 ounce of Cam-shield™ per quart adds 1600 ppm Zinc.
